Kavanaugh Controversy

" I do not believe that anyone should be deprived of their rights without due process. I’d also like to note that this is not a criminal proceeding. The government is not poised to take anything from this man that he has a constitutional right to. This is a job interview. One, I may add, that has been conducted in a disgusting, dispicable, revolting manner. But a large, public, high stakes job interview nonetheless. While I think they should delay the vote for a week or so to flush out an investigation into these claims, I am not naive enough to think it would change anything. The issue with allegations such as these is there is no proof to be found. Any DA or defense attorney or member of law enforcement worth their salt will tell you that sexual assaults are hard enough to prove when there is physical evidence, when they are recent and fresh in memory, when there is corroboration. Even then, the complex issues and biases in this country around consent, and blame, and fault, make those cases difficult.

Watching Dr. Ford’s trauma - and yes, I do believe something terrible happened to her - drop kicked into the public sphere and laid bare for cable news, society writ large and internet trolls to rip apart has been horrifying. The Senate - both sides- should be ashamed. They are shameful. The republicans should allow for a thorough investigation to take place, yes. For sure. But the democrats, I’m sorry, took a woman’s letter that she asked be confidential and used it for political ends.

I’ll say it before and I’ll say it again: sexual assault is not, nor should it ever be, a political issue. It should not, nor should it ever be, something used as a weapon to score political points.

And yet here we are. And at the end of the day, I fear, from all of this, we will have learned nothing.
