We all love celebrating Cinco de Mayo...the tacos, the margaritas, the festivities! But how much do you really know about the fun-filled holiday?

Cinco de Mayo is Sunday and for Americans, we only know a couple of things to do on this day. We know to celebrate it with eating a couple of tacos —and enjoying a '2 for 1' margarita special with friends.

But what exactly is the celebration for?

This holiday is often mistaken in the U.S. for Mexico's Independence day, but the holiday was set 50 years after the country's independence.

What's the significance?

Cinco de Mayo is only celebrated regionally —mostly north of the border. The fifth of May commemorates Mexico's surprising victory over French forces of Napoleon III  in the Battle of Puebla. The win was huge for Mexico but the celebration did not last long since France occupied the country for a few years after.

Is May 5 Mexico's Independence Day?

No, September 16th is Mexican Independence Day which is a national holiday. On that day in 1810, revolutionary priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla's made his famous "Grito de Dolores" ("Cry of Dolores"), a call to arms that amounted to a declaration of war against the Spanish colonial government in 1810.

Why do we celebrate it in the U.S.?

Cinco de Mayo is interpreted as a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage, particularly in Mexican-American populated areas.

In the 1960s, Chicano activists raised awareness of the holiday because they identified with the victory of indigenous Mexicans over Europeans invaders during the Battle of Puebla.

Today we celebrate Cinco de Mayo by having festivals and parades —Mexican restaurants usually have food and drink specials.
